Our team also conducted excavations in the area immediately surrounding the outbuilding. The first goal was to find any evidence of the Stouffer Mill that once was located on the property and has not yet been identified in the modern landscape. However, the surrounding area has also aided our understanding of the building’s history. Excavations so far have turned up a range of artifacts–horseshoes, metal gears, railroad spikes, and nails–that indicate both provisional discard (i.e., garbage deemed to have enough value not to get rid of) and casual loss. We have noted no evidence for additional structures in the south yard.
